ABOUT US
A brief statement about the purpose and goals of the project
IFESTOS, TITAN’s pioneering carbon capture project and the largest of its kind in Europe, is poised to revolutionize the production of zero-carbon cement and concrete while fostering decarbonization synergies with regional industries.
An integral part of TITAN Group’s Net Zero roadmap, IFESTOS is a large-scale carbon capture project at TITAN’s flagship Kamari plant in Greece, near Athens. This initiative is set to catalyze the green transformation of the Greek building materials industry, playing a pivotal role in promoting carbon capture technology across the continent and establishing one of Europe’s most extensive carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chains.
Deploying innovative carbon capture technologies towards net zero
TITAN will retrofit its existing cement kilns at the Kamari plant near Athens, Greece with an innovative carbon capture configuration. First- and second-generation oxyfuel and cryogenic capture technologies will combine to capture 98.5% of the plant’s CO₂ emissions that would otherwise be released during its cement production process. Captured CO₂ will be liquified and transported to a permanent storage site in the Mediterranean.
Exhaust gases from the cement kilns will be enriched to more than 70% CO₂, allowing for high capture efficiency. The project will be the first double-inlet post-combustion system, which will capture emissions from two kilns with different CO₂ content. This approach will enable the avoidance of more than 1.9 million tons of CO₂ annually, which represents around 12% of the annual emissions of all Greek industrial installations (based on data from the 2022 Climate Action Progress Report) and will make IFESTOS one of the largest carbon capture facilities in Europe.
Contributing to EU carbon neutrality and fostering sustainable growth
IFESTOS marks a monumental leap forward in TITAN’s ambitious decarbonization journey. By tackling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a hard-to-abate sector like cement, IFESTOS is contributing to EU carbon neutrality by 2050 in line with the European Green Deal. The project’s scale and the associated value chain will enhance the EU’s sustainable growth in line with the Circular Economy Action Plan, while supporting Europe’s competitiveness and strategic autonomy. In addition, in view of its demand for renewable energy, IFESTOS will create a viable business platform for renewable energy projects, in line with RePowerEU guidelines. IFESTOS will be powered by clean energy and will significantly increase the use of alternative fuels at Kamari.
IFESTOS will be the steppingstone for a regional CCS cluster, acting as a key enabler for local CO₂ shipping and storage infrastructure. It will kickstart the CCS value chain in Southern Europe and encourage the rest of the industry to apply similar models.
IFESTOS being one of the selected EU-funded projects
The EU Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest funding programs for innovative low-carbon technologies, aims to deploy net-zero solutions and drive the transition to climate neutrality in European industry. IFESTOS will receive support from the EU Innovation Fund with a grant of EUR234 million.
